SANDAG Recognizes 137 Local Employers for Encouraging Sustainable Transportation Choices 

SANDAG hosted its annual Diamond Awards reception recognizing organizations across the San Diego region who are making a difference  

On Tuesday, SANDAG hosted its annual Diamond Awards reception at the San Diego Central Library, recognizing 137 organizations across the San Diego region who are making a difference by embracing methods to reduce traffic and promote sustainable commute choices. 

“Today we celebrate the ambassadors of this region who are going above and beyond to ensure our next generation inherits a healthier and stronger community,” said SANDAG and San Diego County Board of Supervisors Chairwoman Nora Vargas. “Working hand in hand with the employers, SANDAG is connecting these organizations and its employees to the resources available to help alleviate traffic congestion in our roads. These efforts give our residents access to clean air no matter what zip code they are in.” 

Diamond Awards celebrates the accomplishments of employers participating in SANDAG’s Employer Commuter Program which offers complimentary transportation assistance to organizations across the San Diego region to support alternatives to driving alone.

Organizations recognized at Tuesday’s event have made enhancements to their facilities like adding bike lockers, showers, and dedicated parking for carpools and vanpools. Additionally, some employers provide incentives, subsidies, and pre-tax deductions to their employees to lessen the financial burden of commuting. 

The Employer Commuter Program is one of SANDAG’s many Sustainable Transportation Services (STS) which aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, congestion, and vehicle miles traveled. Other programs include Vanpool, Bike Education, Guarantee Ride Home, and Try Transit.

SANDAG STS is fully funded through the Federal Highway Administration’s Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement Program. SANDAG has implemented the region’s sustainable transportation program for more than 20 years.
