Clean Transportation

Transportation Electrification

Transportation is the largest source of emissions in the San Diego region. Transportation electrification, including expanding access to zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) and charging infrastructure, can help reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, improve air quality, and decrease petroleum dependence. Zero-emission vehicles can help enhance connectivity, increase safety and sustainability, and improve the quality of life.

SANDAG is helping the region transition to ZEVs of all types and sizes. This includes battery-powered and hydrogen fuel cell passenger vehicles, plus medium-duty vehicles (e.g., school buses, box trucks) and heavy-duty vehicles (e.g., long-haul freight, and semi-trucks).

SANDAG’s transportation electrification efforts are aligned with local and state climate goals. For example, Executive Order N-79-20 issued in September 2020 set mandates for electric vehicle adoption by 2035 across the state. SANDAG also collaborates closely with other local governments and public agencies in the region to work toward shared clean transportation goals.

Accelerate to Zero Emissions Collaboration

Through the Accelerate to Zero (A2Z) Emissions Collaboration, regional partners are working together to advance transportation electrification in the San Diego region. Members of the core team include SANDAG, SDG&E, County of San Diego, San Diego County Air Pollution Control District, and City of San Diego. Representatives from other local governments, public agencies, community-based organizations, industry members, and academia also participate through the steering and advisory committees.

Together, we completed the San Diego Regional Electric Vehicle (EV) Gap Analysis in July 2021 and the San Diego Regional ZEV Strategy in October 2023.
