On Thursday evening, SANDAG and Caltrans will host a virtual meeting to discuss transportation needs near San Diego International Airport and in the surrounding communities, focusing on the proposed development of the Central Mobility Hub.

The Central Mobility Hub is a SANDAG priority project and fundamental objective of the agency’s 2021 Regional Plan, which is currently in development. The Central Mobility Hub could connect all current and future modes of public transportation and provide a much-needed direct transit connection to San Diego International Airport.

Two possible locations are in consideration for the Central Mobility Hub: the Navy Old Town Campus and a site referred to by SANDAG as the Intermodal Transportation Center, which is located near the northeastern edge of the airport between Interstate 5 and Pacific Highway, south of Washington Street. SANDAG is collaborating with the Navy in their effort to revitalize the Navy Old Town Campus to provide new NAVWAR facilities. Over the last year, SANDAG and the Navy have explored how SANDAG could help facilitate the delivery of new NAVWAR facilities and mixed-use development while advancing SANDAG’s separately proposed Central Mobility Hub.

The Central Mobility Hub concepts were developed as part of the concurrent SANDAG and Caltrans effort to develop 12 data-driven Comprehensive Multimodal Corridor Plans to reduce congestion and transform the way people and goods move throughout key corridors in the San Diego region. The plans are necessary to apply for certain state and federal funds, which can be leveraged to support regional transportation projects.

The Central Mobility Hub and Connections Comprehensive Multimodal Corridor Plan is one of the first five corridors prioritized for this specialized planning study. The study area includes the Midway District, Old Town San Diego, Downtown San Diego, and parts of Point Loma. The plan will prioritize development of the Central Mobility Hub to provide a transit connection to the airport and improve transportation within the study area as well as the greater San Diego region.

SANDAG and Caltrans invite members of the public, local businesses, and community-based organizations to learn more about the Central Mobility Hub and Connections study and provide feedback on the Central Mobility Hub concepts. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions, provide comments, and get involved in the planning process.

For members of the public who are unable to attend the virtual public meeting, a recording of the meeting will be posted on the Central Mobility Hub and Connections Corridor virtual engagement site following the live event. Those visiting the site are encouraged to ask questions, leave comments, and provide ideas and suggestions on the interactive map.

Comprehensive Multimodal Corridor Plans evaluate all travel modes and transportation facilities in a defined corridor – highways and freeways, parallel and connecting roadways, transit (bus, Rapid transit, light rail, intercity rail, etc.), pathways, and bikeways.
