Mid-Coast Trolley Crews Complete Freeway Closures Ahead of Schedule

Earlier this week, Mid-Coast Trolley crews completed work to remove falsework—or temporary support structures—from the section of the Trolley bridge that crosses Interstate 5 (I-5) just south of Nobel Drive.

The falsework removal required a series of overnight closures of I-5, which began on Monday, March 2. Crews worked steadily and completed falsework removal four days ahead of schedule, allowing for additional full freeway closures to be cancelled. Falsework was installed in summer 2019 for crews to construct the now complete bridge.

Falsework removal continues along the future Trolley route, and intermittent lane closures on I-5 may be in effect while crews work near the freeway.

When the Mid-Coast Trolley project is complete, the 670-foot-long overcrossing will be one of two points where the extended UC San Diego Blue Line Trolley will travel over I-5.

The Mid-Coast Trolley project will extend UC San Diego Blue Line Trolley service from Downtown San Diego to the University community, serving major activity centers such as Mission Bay, the VA Medical Center, UC San Diego, and University Towne Centre. Nine new stations will be constructed. Major construction work began in 2016, with service anticipated to begin in late 2021.
