Santee Auto Theft Prevention Project
The San Diego Sheriff's Department, with funding from the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) Office, had a one-year project to reduce motor vehicle theft in the City of Santee.
To accomplish this goal, an auto theft tracking database program was developed; deputies were trained regarding appropriate evidence gathering procedures when responding to motor vehicle thefts; local merchants were educated regarding crime prevention strategies; and a long term strategy to maintain a decreased level of auto theft incidents was developed and implemented.
The Criminal Justice Research Division was responsible for conducting the process and impact evaluation of these efforts. Specifically, SANDAG was responsible for analyzing baseline data regarding auto thefts in Santee for 1997 and summarizing information regarding the theft, recovery, victim, and suspect, where appropriate.
In addition, staff also developed and conducted interviews with victims of motor vehicle theft in the City of Santee during 1997 and individuals arrested and/or convicted of motor vehicle theft, coordinate a written survey of merchants, and administer a pre- and post-office training questionnaire.
