The Sweetwater Bikeway begins at Sweetwater Regional Park, continues past the Plaza Bonita Shopping Center along the Sweetwater River, and connects to the Bayshore Bikeway on the west end. At the Plaza Bonita Mall, the bikeway provides access to transit. The connection to the Bayshore Bikeway provides access to multiple transit and multimodal stations with connections throughout the region. The bikeway serves both recreational and commuter biking needs.
Completed in 2015, the Plaza Bonita segment consists of a half-mile Class I bikeway on the west side of Plaza Bonita Road in the City of National City. This segment extends from approximately 2,000 feet north of the intersection of Bonita Mesa Road and Plaza Bonita Road to approximately 400 feet south of the same intersection, closing a gap in the Sweetwater Bikeway and connecting to existing Class I bike paths at each end.
The total cost for the Plaza Bonita segment was $1.45 million. Transportation Enhancement and TransNet funds were used to build the project.
