Project Overview
The North Coast Bike Trail is a regional bike and pedestrian project within the Interstate 5 (I-5) North Coast Corridor (NCC) program. It is designed to improve east-west and north-south connections along the I-5 and coastal rail corridors while helping close gaps in existing regional trail networks. The trail system complements the Coastal Rail Trail and connects to other regional bike corridors throughout northern San Diego County.
When complete, the trail will provide approximately 27 miles of bike and pedestrian connections generally parallel to I-5, linking Oceanside, Carlsbad, Encinitas, Solana Beach, Del Mar, and northern San Diego.
Schedule
Approximately seven miles of North Coast Bike Trail improvements were completed in 2022 as part of Build NCC, the first major phase of the NCC program, including:
- Trail access improvements near Rios Trail and Solana Hills Drive
- New separated bike path and on-street bike lane improvements along Manchester Avenue near the I-5 ramps
- A protected bike path along the southbound Manchester Avenue off-ramp
- Bike node improvements near Birmingham Drive
- San Elijo Lagoon bike and pedestrian improvements, including the suspended trail bridge beneath the I-5 bridge crossing
- Trail lighting, fencing, and related access improvements completed as part of the corridor improvements
Future planned improvements include additional separated bike path segments, lagoon crossing and trail connectivity improvements, regional trail gap closures, and expanded connections to existing coastal and regional bikeway systems.
Budget
The trail was funded with a mix of federal, state, and regional TransNet revenue.
