University Bikeway

Construction Notice: Crews have started construction along University Avenue between 60th and 69th Street, with lanes reduced to one in each direction. Work is anticipated to last several months. Bonillo Drive, Aragon Drive, and Alamo Drive will be closed to through traffic at University Avenue with no left turn permitted. Parking will be reduced on University Avenue during construction. (updated 04.01.2026)

The University Bikeway project will provide a vital connection for residents to walk and bike within San Diego’s communities of City Heights, El Cerrito, Rolando Park, Rolando Village, and La Mesa. The project will run along University Avenue between Estrella Avenue and 69th Street and along Estrella Avenue between University and Orange avenues.

The project includes 2.8 miles of separated bikeways and buffered bike lanes, bus islands, high-visibility pavement makings, and protected intersections designed to make the streets more safe and pleasant for everyone. In addition, SANDAG has partnered with the City of San Diego to resurface University Avenue for the length of the project.

The project was strategically selected and designed to enhance transit and roadway operations and maximize safety for all road users. SANDAG engaged local businesses, residents, schools, and community groups to incorporate feedback on the project during the planning, environmental, and design phases.

We started construction in March 2026 and expect to complete it in late 2027. SANDAG will manage construction and the City of San Diego will own and operate the bikeway upon completion.

The University Bikeway will connect to the future Orange Bikeway (one of six segments planned as part of the North Park | Mid-City Bikeways), Central Avenue Bikeway, and other bikeways in the City of San Diego and La Mesa.
