Construction Notice: Crews are working along Orange Avenue between 33rd Street and 35th Street. Expect temporary road closures, traffic detours, and restricted parking and walkway access. (updated 08.07.2026)
Project Overview
The Orange Avenue Complete Streets project was previously known as the Orange Bikeway project. We renamed it to more accurately reflect the work that we are doing. In addition to 2.1 miles of buffered bike lanes, the project also includes median islands, a traffic circle, curb extensions, and other traffic calming measures designed to improve travel and safety for all roadway users.
The project will provide a vital connection for residents to walk and bike between San Diego’s communities of North Park and City Heights. Improvements are planned along Orange Avenue between 32nd Street and Estrella Avenue.
The project was strategically selected and designed to maximize safety and enhance usability for everyone on the road. SANDAG engaged with local businesses, residents, schools, and community groups to solicit feedback, which was incorporated into the project during the planning, environmental, and design phases.
SANDAG will manage construction and the City of San Diego will own and operate the bikeway upon completion.
Schedule
We started construction in August 2026 and expect project completion to take about two years. The bikeway on Orange Avenue will connect to the bikeway on University Avenue and the Central Avenue Complete Streets project, both of which are currently in construction, and the future Howard Avenue Complete Streets project.
