Coastal Rail Trail

The Coastal Rail Trail is a planned continuous bike route that runs approximately 42 miles between Oceanside and Santa Fe Depot in Downtown San Diego. It is divided into several segments, some of which are being constructed by SANDAG, while the rest are being constructed by the various cities the trail traverses.

Planning began in the mid-1990s, and SANDAG expects to begin construction on the last of our funded segments in 2027.

SANDAG's Contributions to the Coastal Rail Trail

The Encinitas segment of the Coastal Rail Trail connects many popular locations including the Downtown Encinitas COASTER station, Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas, the Santa Fe Drive rail undercrossing, Swamis Seaside Park, George Berkich Park, Cardiff Elementary School, Cardiff State Beach, San Elijo State Beach and Campground, Carpentier Parkway, Downtown Cardiff, and Glen Park. 

In May 2019, we opened a 1.3-mile segment that facilitates walking and biking on a multiuse path from Chesterfield Drive to the Santa Fe Drive undercrossing along the east side of the railroad tracks near San Elijo Avenue.

The design phase is complete on the .4-mile segment from Santa Fe Drive to E Street, and construction is planned for 2027.

The Rose Creek Bikeway is a Class I bike path that connects existing sections of the Rose Canyon and Rose Creek bike paths in the City of San Diego. It begins at the north end of Santa Fe Street and connects to an existing bike path at Damon Street and Mission Bay Drive. The bikeway was built in conjunction with the Mid-Coast Trolley project and opened to the public in May 2021.

In 2014, SANDAG completed the Oceanside segment of the Coastal Rail Trail between Oceanside Boulevard and Wisconsin Avenue.

Funding from the federal Transportation Enhancements program and TransNet made this segment possible.
