Tribal Governments

Tribal Governments

The San Diego region is home to 18 Native American reservations represented by 17 Tribal Governments, the most in any county in the United States.

The Intraregional Tribal Transportation Strategy (ITTS) is the result of a collaborative effort between SANDAG and the Southern California Tribal Chairmen’s Association (SCTCA) to address tribal transportation needs in the San Diego region effectively and innovatively.

The Strategy is the outcome of assembling existing conditions information and new data collection, as well as regular conversations among tribal leadership, transportation agencies, and other regional stakeholders. The Strategy was completed in 2018 to guide stakeholders so they can advance the transportation goals of tribal communities now and into the future.

The Strategy was updated between April 2021 and March 2022 to reflect current mobility needs and opportunities identified by tribes and the 2021 Regional Plan.

Tribal Governments Taskforce

The Tribal Governments Taskforce meets generally once per quarter, typically the second Wednesday in March, June, September, and December from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at locations throughout San Diego County. San Diego Regional Tribal Summits

SANDAG, through its government-to-government framework with tribal nations in the region, convenes tribal summits every four years to engage regional leaders in a diplomatic dialogue. Tribal summits result from collaboration between SANDAG and the Southern California Tribal Chairmen’s Association (SCTCA). The purpose is to bring together elected leaders from the 19 local governments who make up the SANDAG Board of Directors and the 18 federally recognized tribal governments in the San Diego region to discuss policy issues of mutual interest related to transportation and regional planning. The goal is to identify priority actions that can be addressed through continued collaboration and coordination.
