Governor Gavin Newsom announced an award of $100 million today for SANDAG and North County Transit District (NCTD) through the Transit and Intercity Rail Capital Program (TIRCP). SANDAG and NCTD received the program’s largest grant award to deliver the San Dieguito Bridge Replacement, Double Track, and Special Events Platform Project. Funding will go towards replacing a 107-year-old bridge in Del Mar, adding 0.9 miles of double track in the area, and constructing a special events platform at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. The project is part of the proposed improvements to the nation’s second busiest rail corridor, the Los Angeles-San Diego-San Luis Obispo (LOSSAN) intercity rail corridor. 

SANDAG and NCTD will be able to leverage additional federal funding to complete construction. SANDAG plans to implement double tracks along the entire LOSSAN corridor by 2035 to accommodate future demand with faster and more frequent train service.
