I-5/Genesee Interchange

Caltrans and SANDAG
TRANSNET PROGRAM

Project Overview

The Interstate 5 (I-5)/Genesee Avenue Interchange project provided an east-west connection to major employers in the La Jolla and University City communities of San Diego. SANDAG and Caltrans partnered to complete the project, which replaced the existing 6-lane Genesee Avenue overpass with a 10-lane bridge. The new bridge accommodates additional vehicle lanes, sidewalks, and bicycle routes. The project was an integral piece of the broader improvements planned in the I-5 North Coast Corridor.

Along with the replacement of the overcrossing, the project:

  • Widened the freeway access ramps at Genesee Avenue and Sorrento Valley Road
  • Added an auxiliary lane in the northbound direction on I-5 between Genesee Avenue and Roselle Street
  • Repaved existing general purpose lanes from Genesee Avenue to Sorrento Valley Road with a new rubberized asphalt mix
  • Widened Genesee Avenue in both directions to provide new through and turn lanes
  • Constructed a new, separated bicycle/pedestrian path that provided a critical link to the full stretch of bikeways between Mission Bay and State Route (SR) 56
