Mira Costa Community College Environmental Scan

Mira Costa Community College Environmental Scan

MiraCosta Community College District is one of five community college districts in the San Diego region. It has served the coastal area of North San Diego County for 70 years, providing transfer preparation, vocational education, general education, basic skills development, community education, and workforce development. Recognizing that individuals and communities are diverse and changing, the District needed up-to-date information on the changing demographic, economic, social, and political environment in order to determine how the changes will impact students, staff, alumni and the community and how to offer services that meet their needs.

Study Objectives

The MiraCosta College District retained SourcePoint to design, perform, and publish an Environmental Scan. The purpose of the scan was to provide a broad-based look at the changing demographic, economic, social, and political environment in the District’s region served by its three campuses, and determine how the changes will impact District students, staff, and surrounding communities. An important objective was to provide information to help the District plan, develop collaborative strategies, and identify issues and concerns that could affect the District’s ability to meet the community’s educational needs.

SourcePoint Solution

Through SourcePoint’s extensive experience producing demographic and economic trend analyses as well as designing, implementing, and analyzing community surveys, SourcePoint prepared an Environmental Scan for Mira Costa Community College District. The scan examined underlying shifts, trends and changes in the environment to help the District identify opportunities and constraints and areas needing change. The report included demographic characteristics, student and commute characteristics, enrollment trends and forecast, course assessment and occupational trends, workforce availability and labor supply, and survey results from employees, businesses, and the public.
