Open houses held for South Bay BRT project

Everyone is invited to a series of open houses that SANDAG will host in early December to inform the public about an innovative new public transit service being planned to establish rapid bus service between the Otay Mesa border crossing and downtown San Diego via eastern Chula Vista.

Expected to go into service in 2013, the South Bay Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) service will travel north on SR 125 from Otay Mesa, cross eastern Chula Vista in special “guideways” and bus-only lanes, head north on I-805, and then west on SR 94 to downtown.

The three open houses will be held at schools in eastern Chula Vista, which will benefit from five stops on the new route. Project team members will be on hand to answer questions from the public. The events will be held on:

• Tuesday, December 1, 2009, (3 to 7 p.m.) at Heritage Elementary School, 1450 Santa Lucia Road, Chula Vista

• Thursday, December 3, 2009, (3 to 7 p.m.) at Rancho Del Rey Middle School, 1174 East J Street, Chula Vista

• Monday, December 7, 2009, (3 to 7 p.m.) at Olympian High School, 1925 Magdalena Avenue, Chula Vista

The 21-mile route will feature fewer stops, more comfortable vehicles, and fast, frequent service. In addition to special lanes, the system will include technology to move through traffic signals more quickly.

SANDAG will design and build the South Bay BRT project, and the Metropolitan Transit System will operate the service.
