In 2011, the San Diego Police Department received a second round of CalGRIP (Gang Reduction, Intervention, and Prevention) funds to address the issue of gangs in the Mid-City and Southeast areas of the City of San Diego. The project combines gang suppression operations with prevention services provided by the City of San Diego's Parks and Recreation Department in the form of extended hours of recreation centers and intervention services provided by METRO United to gang-involved youth.

SANDAG is tasked with collecting and reporting on the outcome measures. Data collection includes treatment tracking, youth participation and satisfaction with services, violent crime in the target areas, and a police perception survey. A final report was presented to the Gang Commission in 2013.
