Draft Airport Multimodal Accessibility Plan available for comment

Public comments will be accepted through August 24 on the Draft Airport Multimodal Accessibility Plan (AMAP), a document that evaluates various options to improve surface transportation to the San Diego International Airport and other aviation hubs in the region.

The report is focused on enhancing infrastructure so automobiles, trains, and buses can more easily reach airports that face growing aviation demand. Each year, more than 11.5 million air passengers within San Diego County use the San Diego International Airport, Tijuana Rodriguez International Airport, and McClellan-Palomar Airport.

The AMAP explores a range of options to improve airport access, including roadway and highway modifications and the reconfiguration of transit services and facilities. The airport improvement options considered by the AMAP were previously identified in the Regional Aviation Strategic Plan (RASP) by the San Diego County Airport Authority.

SANDAG developed the AMAP in collaboration with the Airport Authority to comply with California Senate Bill 10 authored by Senator Christine Kehoe and passed in 2007. The intent of the legislation is to promote long-range planning for airports, advance regional transportation strategies, and explore mechanisms for regional cooperation.

Findings from the AMAP are being incorporated into the 2050 Regional Transportation Plan, a $196-billion blueprint for the improvement of the region’s transportation system over the next 40 years.

The SANDAG Board of Directors released the AMAP for a 60-day public review on June 24, 2011. The report is available at To comment, please contact Linda Culp at or (619) 699-6957.
