Overnight Closure of the South Bay Expressway/ State Route 125 Between Olympic Parkway and Birch Road on May 23 and May 24

May 23, 2018-- The South Bay Expressway/State Route 125 (SR 125) will be closed overnight between Olympic Parkway and Birch Road on Wednesday, May 23 and Thursday, May 24, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. to accommodate construction activities.

Crews will perform sandblasting of the new guideway bridge that spans the South Bay Expressway/SR 125. The work is part of the South Bay Rapid project, a new transit service in South County. The southbound direction of the South Bay Expressway will be closed overnight on Wednesday, May 23, and the northbound direction will be closed overnight on Thursday, May 24.

Travelers are urged to avoid the area or take alternate routes. Motorists will be detoured around the overnight closures via Olympic Parkway, Eastlake Parkway, and Birch Road. Residents adjacent to the South Bay Expressway/SR 125 between Olympic Parkway and Birch Road can expect intermittent construction noise and lights during the closures.

All reasonable steps will be taken to minimize impacts to nearby businesses, residents, and travelers. New water-efficient landscaping and storm water management features will be installed at the completion of construction.

The South Bay Rapid will provide travelers with a new, frequent, and reliable transit choice. The 26-mile Rapid route will run between the Otay Mesa Port of Entry and Downtown San Diego via a dedicated transit guideway along East Palomar Street and Eastlake Parkway in Chula Vista. The project costs $128 million. When completed, South Bay Rapid will connect residents to employment and activity centers in Downtown San Diego and South County.
