Traffic Closures Scheduled for I-5 Sunday Morning and Late Monday Night to Early Tuesday Morning

March 23, 2018 - The following closures are scheduled for San Diego Trolley expansion work and Gilman Drive Bridge construction.

SUNDAY, MARCH 25, 2018

Motorists will encounter a series of short, intermittent traffic closures on the northbound and southbound lanes of I-5, north of the SR 52 connector. Traffic closures are necessary for SDG&E crews to safely and efficiently remove utility lines across the freeway in anticipation of the Mid-Coast Trolley extension.

The I-5 lanes will be affected on Sunday from 6 to 8:30 a.m. Motorists can expect traffic delays of up to 10 minutes at a time as crews remove fiber lines across the freeway. CHP units will be present and monitoring the traffic delays.

Traffic controls will be placed to alert motorists in advance of the delays. Detours will not be necessary for this work.

The Mid-Coast Trolley Project will extend Blue Line Trolley service from Old Town north to the University City community, serving major activity centers such as Mission Bay Park, the VA Medical Center, UC San Diego, and Westfield UTC. Nine new stations will be constructed. Major construction work began in 2016, with service anticipated to begin in 2021.

MONDAY, MARCH 26, THROUGH TUESDAY, MARCH 27, 2018

From 9 p.m. Monday through 5 a.m. Tuesday, the southbound I-5 lanes will be temporarily closed to motorists for work being done on the under-construction Gilman Drive Bridge. The southbound I-5 will be closed from the Interstate 805/I-5 merge to La Jolla Village Drive

During the closure construction crews will pour the superstructure portion of the bridge with concrete. The work was postponed earlier this month due to weather.

Southbound motorists will be detoured via I-805. Traffic controls and detour signs will be in place to alert motorists in advance. Motorists should anticipate delays, follow detour signs, and take alternate routes to avoid potential congestion.

SANDAG, in partnership with Caltrans, and UC San Diego, is building the bridge over I-5 at Gilman Drive, just north of the La Jolla Village Drive interchange.

The bridge and related roadway improvements will connect Gilman Drive to the west and Medical Center Drive to the east, a vital campus link for UC San Diego. The new bridge will add a second on-campus crossing over I-5.

Please note, all closures are subject to change.
