KIVA

The McAlister Institute for Treatment and Education (MITE) was awarded a grant from the California Endowment to provide a continuum of integrated trauma informed services to pregnant and postpartum women and their children.

The Criminal Justice Research Division was retained in June 2004 as the outside evaluator to conduct the process and impact evaluation of MITE’s Beyond Trauma program; a trauma informed, gender-specific treatment program. SANDAG is responsible for documenting if the project design is implemented as planned and what effect these efforts have on the clients who complete the program.

SANDAG compiled and analyzed clients’ demographics, trauma symptoms, alcohol and drug use, parenting self-perception, criminal activity, and mental and physical health status. SANDAG research staff worked with KIVA to track clients and collect data from standardized assessments, intake and exit forms, knowledge tests, and client satisfaction surveys at seven points in time; at intake, three times during program participation, at exit and at 6- and 12-months following program completion.  Evaluation of the KIVA project was completed in 2006.
