Freight Systems

San Diego and Imperial County Freight Gateway Study

In March 2010 SANDAG published the Comprehensive Freight Gateway Study. The study provides a forecast of regional freight traffic in San Diego and Imperial Counties through 2050. The primary objective of the study was to give SANDAG, the Imperial County Transportation Commission, and other regional stakeholders access to timely and thorough freight flow information as an estimation tool to better plan and manage a sustainable freight network, with a particular emphasis on cross border freight flows.

The Gateway Study informed the 2050 Goods Movement Strategy, a component of the SANDAG 2050 Regional Transportation Plan, by identifying current and future freight flows and by providing insights into how freight investments impact freight flows, industrial development, and related economic activity
