Freight Gateway Study Update

SANDAG is working on the 2016 Freight Gateway Study Update to provide a revised forecast of regional freight tonnage and value in San Diego and Imperial Counties through 2050.

The primary objective of the study update is to give SANDAG, the Imperial County Transportation Commission, and other regional stakeholders access to timely and thorough freight flow information.

Freight flow information can be used as an estimation tool to better plan and manage a sustainable freight network, with a particular emphasis on cross-border freight flows.

The Freight Gateway Study Update includes a 2012 baseline (new baseline) and a forecast of future growth opportunities (forecast to 2035 and 2050) for the region’s gateways, including:

• All Land Ports of Entry
• Seaports of Entry (Tenth Avenue and National City Marine Terminals)
• International Airports of Entry

The Freight Gateway Study Update will assess how freight tonnage enters/leaves the region through these gateways, as well as the domestic freight flows associated with consumption within the region, seeking to understand freight demand from a comprehensive supply chain perspective.
