Comprehensive Land Use and Regional Growth Projects

Regional Safe Routes to School Implementation

HHSA

Healthy Works

The SANDAG Safe Routes to School Healthy Works/Communities Putting Prevention to Work (CPPW) project developed a Regional Safe Routes to School Strategic Plan and provided implementation resources to local communities in the form of pass-through grants and technical assistance.

Regional Safe Routes to School Strategic Plan

In September 2010, SANDAG began engaging key stakeholders and the region’s residents in the development of the Draft Regional Safe Routes to School Strategic Plan. The Draft Strategic Plan was revised to reflect community, stakeholder input and SANDAG committee and working group comments. The final Strategic Plan was accepted by the SANDAG Transportation Committee on March 2, 2012.

The Regional Safe Routes to School Strategic Plan will guide SANDAG as it works to make walking and bicycling to school safer and more attractive travel choices for families throughout the region.  It identifies a regional strategy to support local communities in establishing new Safe Routes to School programs as well as sustaining and enhancing existing efforts.

Safe Routes to School efforts support the objectives of the Regional Comprehensive Plan (RCP) and 2050 Regional Transportation Plan and Sustainable Communities Strategy (2050 RTP and SCS) to create walkable and bicycle-friendly communities, encourage active transportation to reduce vehicle trips and improve public health.

In partnership with local jurisdictions, public health agencies, school districts, and community-based organizations, a Safe Routes to School Coalition was formed to collaboratively address Safe Routes to School related issues. The Coalition will continue to meet bi-monthly in San Diego. For additional information, and to be added to the e-mail distribution list, please contact Bridget Enderle at bridget.enderle@sandag.org
