San Ysidro Intermodal Transportation Center: Roads and Highways
San Ysidro Intermodal Transportation Center

Completed in 2003, the $21 million San Ysidro Intermodal Transportation Center reduces traffic congestion and enhances public safety in and around the San Ysidro Port of Entry.

Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) planners identified a problem with the area over ten years ago. Congestion within the 700 block of East San Ysidro Boulevard was overwhelming. Pedestrians, drivers, and bicyclists were competing for the same space. Currently 20 percent of trolley rides begin at the San Ysidro Trolley Station, making it the highest ridership generating station in the system.

MTS coordinated the work of the project with the City of San Diego, Caltrans, General Services of Administration, San Diego Gas & Electric, Pacific Bell as well as with local business owners directly impacted by the construction.

The San Ysidro- México Port of Entry is the principal gateway between San Diego and Tijuana. In fiscal year 1999 (October 1, 1998 to September 30, 1999) 107,193 buses, 15 million passenger vehicles, and 41.4 million persons crossed from south to north at this port of entry.
