SANDAG takes crucial steps to move forward

August 18, 2017 - The SANDAG Executive Committee approved the waiver of the 120-day notice provision in Gary Gallegos’ contract and accepted his resignation effective today. In addition, they placed the Chief Deputy Executive Director in charge of the agency.

“Gary Gallegos’ departure from SANDAG is a big loss for our region, but his decision to step down will allow the Board to move forward with enhancing our regional mobility future,” said SANDAG Chair and County Supervisor Ron Roberts. “Our County has benefitted tremendously from his talent at attracting federal and state grant funding, and building effective collaboration among stakeholders. His leadership is widely respected from the hallways of Washington, D.C. to our partners in Mexico.”

The SANDAG Board will soon consider the next steps for the recruitment of the new Executive Director. While this process is underway, the Board is committed to strengthening the agency’s transparency and improving oversight practices.

“Gary’s resignation, while difficult, provides an opportunity to continue the internal transformation that the independent examination recommended,” said Chair Roberts. “We will now begin a search for an Executive Director to lead the agency and instill new processes to ensure transparency. Together we will continue to improve the San Diego region through building critical infrastructure projects such as the Mid-Coast Trolley, North Coast Corridor, South Bay Rapid, and the Otay Mesa East Port of Entry.”
