Public Transit



Rapid is a growing network of transit service that first began operating along the I-15 corridor in June 2014 and is expanding region wide. Rapid provides high-frequency, limited-stop service with increased reliability and convenience. The Rapid network connects residential areas to major employment centers and other key destinations, such as schools and shopping centers. Rapid features include transit signal priority, dedicated transit-only lanes, digital displays announcing next vehicle arrival times, modern shelters, and fewer stops. Other planned improvements include a Wi-Fi pilot program and transit improvements in the Kearny Mesa area.

I-15 Rapid Service

  • Rapid 235 is an all-day, limited-stop service (15 minute frequency in peak hours and 30 minute frequency off-peak) that began service in June 2014 between the Escondido Transit Center and Downtown San Diego via the I-15 Express Lanes.

  • Rapid 237 is a weekday, extended peak hour service that began service in October 2014 between Rancho Bernardo Transit Station and UC San Diego, and between Miramar College and UC San Diego via I-15 and Mira Mesa Boulevard.

  • Rapid Express 280 and 290 operate along the I-15 corridor during weekday peak hour periods. Rapid Express 280 operates between the Escondido Transit Center and Downtown San Diego with one stop at the Del Lago Transit Station. Rapid Express 290 operates between the Rancho Bernardo Transit Station and Downtown San Diego with one stop at the Sabre Springs/Peñasquitos Transit Station.

    Mid-City Rapid

    Mid-City Rapid 215 is a high-frequency, limited-stop route between San Diego State University and Downtown San Diego via El Cajon and Park boulevards that began service on October 12, 2014. Signature elements include dedicated transit-only lanes on Park Boulevard between University Avenue and El Cajon Boulevard and iconic red shelters along the route that provide generous shade.

  • SuperLoop Rapid

    SuperLoop Rapid Routes 201, 202, and 204 provide high-frequency service in the north University City/Golden Triangle area, seven days a week. This service began in 2009 as SuperLoop and joined the Rapid network in 2015. To date, 19 SuperLoop Rapid stations have been installed, and improvements to roadways and traffic signals have been completed in several locations on the route.

    Downtown Rapid Stations

    Construction of Downtown San Diego Rapid stations began in March 2014 with stations on 11th Avenue and a transit-only lane to improve traffic flow. Three stations are complete and open for service; the remaining eight stations will be built in two phases, with the first phase scheduled for completion in fall 2015 and the second phase scheduled for completion in spring 2016.

    Mid-City Centerline Rapid Transit Stations

    Construction is underway to build San Diego’s first freeway-level transit stations along SR 15 at University Avenue and El Cajon Boulevard. The Mid-City Centerline Rapid Transit Stations project also will construct transit-only lanes within the existing median from just north of I-805 to just south of I-8. Once completed, Rapid services will run in northbound and southbound transit-only lanes within the existing median, which will help improve on-time performance between the existing Rapid and local transit routes. The new stations are expected to be completed in 2017.

    South Bay Rapid

    A new Rapid route will launch between Otay Mesa and Downtown San Diego (via I-805 and SR 94) in 2018. When completed, South Bay Rapid will span a 21-mile route, connecting residents to employment and activity centers in Downtown San Diego and the South Bay.

    Additional Improvements to Rapid Services

  • Wi-Fi. In 2016, a one-year Wi-Fi pilot program will evaluate the feasibility of providing free internet to Rapid 215, 235, and 237 riders.

  • Kearny Mesa Transit Improvements. The following improvements are under consideration along Clairemont Mesa Boulevard between SR 163 and I-15:

    - Phase One: Transit Signal Priority (TSP). TSP treatments allow Rapid vehicles to move through traffic more efficiently and maintain more reliable schedules. Signal improvements will be implemented by the end of 2015.

    - Phase Two: New Station to Serve Kaiser Permanente. In partnership with Kaiser Permanente, an additional Rapid station is planned at Ruffin Road to serve the new hospital in January 2017. This new Rapid station will include a large modern lighted shelter and a digital display announcing next vehicle arrival times.

    - Phase Three: Upgrades to Kearny Mesa Rapid Stations. Opportunities to upgrade existing Rapid stops on Clairemont Mesa Boulevard at Complex Drive, Overland Avenue, and Ruffin Road are being evaluated. Proposed improvements at each stop include a protected bike lane within the transit station, a bigger platform area to include a large modern shelter, a digital display announcing next vehicle arrival times, and secure bike parking. Final design of proposed improvements will begin in fall 2015. View conceptual designs.

  • Parking Access Control. Parking technologies are being researched to provide access to transit riders at the San Diego Miramar College and Del Lago transit stations.
