MTS launches high-frequency bus network
A new network of high frequency bus routes highlights the second phase of the sweeping redesign of the Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) bus system. Beginning in September, more than 25 routes with frequencies of at least 15 minutes crisscross the MTS territory. The network also features new limited stop services along highly traveled corridors, more direct routes between new residential areas and work centers, neighborhood circulators, and new late night service on the Green Line Trolley between Old Town and SDSU. “The whole intent of our bus system redesign is to make it operate more efficiently and provide greater convenience for the majority of our riders,” said Paul Jablonski, CEO of MTS. “Increasing frequency takes the guesswork out of riding the bus. Now, in almost every area of our service territory, we have buses coming along every 15 minutes all day long, making it much easier for people to use public transportation.” Another major addition to the system is Limited Stop services on the Routes 10 (University Avenue), 15 (El Cajon Boulevard), and 120 (Fashion Valley to Downtown via 163 and Fourth and Fifth avenues). These routes will stop only at major intersections and transfer points rather than at every block, thereby providing faster travel times. Other changes to the system include new neighborhood circulators, such as the new Route 48/49 in the University City area and the 916/917 in the College Grove area. MTS will implement the final phase of its bus route changes at the end of January 2007, ending a comprehensive, three-year master planning effort. For more information, go to www.sdcommute.com. |
