Employers Can Help Commuters Survive the Drive

Gas prices are out of control but that doesn’t mean you and your employees have to run for cover. SANDAG can help commuters survive the drive!

We’re here to help with free consulting services that will solve employee commute or parking problems at your worksite. We'll conduct surveys free of charge to discover the commuting challenges your employees are facing. Then strategize with you to design a commuter program that meets your needs. Many of the commuter programs SANDAG offers cost little or nothing to your company.

And SANDAG will do all the work. We'll provide the communication tools to get your employees interested: posters and brochures to market your program and monthly promotional programs to help get the message out. Your SANDAG account executive will provide all of the information needed to help your employees understand their commute options.

SANDAG can help with the following strategies and services:

Carpool Partner Matching
Help your employees outsmart traffic by finding a carpool partner. Your SANDAG account executive will provide a free survey to match your employees with other commuters who live and work near them. The best part: they'll be able to cut fuel costs by sharing the ride.

Regional Vanpool Program
Your employees can become immune to traffic congestion by forming a vanpool. It’s comfortable, reasonably priced, and convenient. All it takes is one driver and 6 passengers with similar commutes to share the drive and the expenses. Not only will we help them get started by providing a list of people to vanpool with, SANDAG will help foot the bill. SANDAG and the San Diego County Air Pollution Control District have formed an alliance to offer a $400 per month subsidy for qualifying vanpools. That equals money back in your employees’ pockets and more cars off the road.

Let SANDAG set up an informational vanpool meeting at your worksite. We’ll administer a free ridematch survey, analyze the results and provide you with a “getting started” presentation. You’ll solve your worksite parking problems and your employees will be sitting pretty in their new vanpools.

Bike to Work
With more than 700 miles of bikeways and year-round temperate weather, biking to work gives employees freedom from the freeways and an opportunity to exercise and outsmart traffic. SANDAG’s bike lockers are placed at over 50 locations throughout the region and provide safe and secure storage for bicycling commuters. We’ll even provide maps that show official bike lanes for fast and safe biking to work.

Corporate Tax benefits
Under the Transportation Equity Act and IRS code 132(f), employers can offer employees who ride in a vanpool or use public transit a tax-free benefit up to $100 a month. Offering this benefit is easier than you might expect! There is no written plan required and the corporation can enjoy a tax savings while providing an additional benefit at little or no cost to the company.

ECO Pass
The ECO Pass program provides you a way to offer an attractive, low-cost employee public transit benefit on select services and to lessen the demand for on-site parking. Employers simply pre-purchase a minimum of 25 transit passes per month for qualified employees and pay one low cost. Pricing is reduced dependent on the number of passes pre-purchased.

Teleworking and Flex Time
Flextime allows your employees to drive to work during non-peak hours, so they can zip right in. SANDAG can assist you in setting up alternative hours for your employees so they are not on the road and stuck in traffic during rush hours.

Instead of getting on the road at all, employees can telework. This means more available parking spaces in your lot and happier, more productive employees. SANDAG provides free consulting services plus all the tools you need to set up and administer a telework program. Many telework programs begin as a part-time option and require minimal technology.

Guaranteed Ride Home Program
For those who carpool, vanpool, bike, or take commuter express buses or the Coaster train three or more times a week, SANDAG and the San Diego County Air Pollution Control District will get them home in the case of an emergency or unscheduled overtime. Now employees don’t have to worry about sending up an SOS signal.
