MTS receives $1.2 million in Homeland Security grants

MTS trolley

The Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) has been awarded more than $1.2 million from the Department of Homeland Security to improve security systems for its Trolley and Bus operations.

The awarded funds will be used to enhance security operations by installing a new security system for its Bus operations facility in downtown San Diego, installing new closed-circuit monitoring systems at the 12th and Imperial and American Plaza Transit Stations, and upgrading camera monitoring systems at the Old Town and San Diego State University Transit Centers.

“This grant allows MTS to continue its comprehensive program to install and enhance security features throughout our system,” said Paul Jablonski, Chief Executive Officer of MTS. “Public safety is one of our top priorities and this grant will help keep MTS one of the safest public transit systems in the nation. For several years, MTS has been focused on securing its system and improving the region's ability to respond in the event of a disaster. Grants like these help, and we will continue to seek the resources we need."

MTS operates 53 miles of light rail on three different lines and it includes a tunnel and underground station at SDSU. It also operates a network of nearly 100 fixed bus routes. In the fiscal year ending June 30, 2006, MTS generated more than 77 million trips on its system.
