Regional Pedestrian Design Guidelines Lauded by National Planning Organization

SANDAG recently won a national planning award for developing a comprehensive resource to help local cities create neighborhoods that encourage walking as a mode of transportation.

The Association of Metropolitan Planning Organizations (AMPO) is lauding the agency for its work on the Planning and Designing for Pedestrian: Model Design Guidelines for the San Diego Region.

SANDAG’s Walkable Communities Advisory Committee led the effort to develop the pedestrian design guidelines, a comprehensive primer for cities, developers, and others to design or redevelopment neighborhoods that encourage and allow people to walk rather than drive.

The SANDAG Pedestrian Design Guidelines respond to the need for standards that incorporate pedestrian mobility, safety, and accessibility into the local and regional planning process. Design and construction of walkable communities in new and established neighborhoods is underway throughout the San Diego region. The guidelines provide the solutions for local jurisdictions to “walk the walk.”
