Smart growth is a smart move
Transit Oriented Development (TOD) is the new call to action for developers in San Diego as the region plans for continued growth. And once again – just as the Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) led the nation in the redevelopment of light rail systems – MTS is ahead of the curve. On November 2, 2006, CityLink, MTS, and the City of San Diego celebrated the grand opening of the Village at Morena Vista, a 5.27-acre mixed use retail/commercial/apartment complex adjacent to the Morena/Linda Vista Trolley Station. The project includes a total of 184 combined apartment, town home, and commercial lofts just one stop away from the Old Town Transit Center, which serves as a multi-modal hub for commuter trains, trolleys, and numerous bus routes. This is another example of TOD projects in the MTS service territory. There are two other prominent new projects in the pipeline, including a 527-unit apartment complex with a 600-space parking structure at the Grossmont Transit Center in La Mesa, and the Smart Corner development on 12th and C Street in downtown San Diego, which features a 19-story residential and commercial structure. These smart growth developments provide centrally located and affordable housing alternatives. They create a synergy between public transit, housing, and employment that will help ensure mobility and a higher quality of life for our region. The Village at Morena Vista is just another example of the smart moves being made throughout our region.
