Westbound widening of SR 52 set to begin
SR 52 Groundbreaking

On October 28, SANDAG and Caltrans broke ground on the highly-anticipated widening of westbound SR 52 from two to three lanes between Mast Boulevard and Santo Road. The $4.3 million TransNet Early Action project is funded with state dollars from California’s Strategic Growth Plan and the TransNet half-cent sales tax, and will provide commuters with a smoother drive out of Santee upon completion in early 2007.

"Steadfast in our commitment to keep San Diego moving, SANDAG and Caltrans have made the SR 52 expansion a priority, accelerating it through the TransNet Early Action Program,” said Mickey Cafagna, SANDAG Chair and City of Poway Mayor. “This is a promise kept to the San Diego region.”

The widening of westbound SR 52 is just part of a comprehensive, multi-phase renovation that SANDAG and Caltrans have planned for the thriving corridor. The more than $650 million endeavor will revitalize travel in the East County. The eastbound widening project will go to construction in 2007.

In addition to these widening projects, the final piece of SR 52 will extend east from SR 125, through the City of Santee, and connect with SR 67. The $447 million, four-lane stretch is scheduled for completion in 2010, and will consist of three pieces — SR 125 to Cuyamaca Street, Cuyamaca Street to SR 67, and the SR 67 interchange.

Adding to these improvements on SR 52 will be the addition of TransNet-funded Managed Lanes between SR 125 and Interstate 15. Future plans include extending the Managed Lanes to I-805.

“We are determined to work as efficiently as possible to bring these projects to life,” said Pedro Orso-Delgado, Director of Caltrans District 11. “We always enjoy bringing good news to the public — an improved highway, a brand new road, a better bridge — and this work on the 52 is certainly good news.”

These projects are expected to ease traffic congestion in the booming corridor as Santee, like the rest of the region, continues to grow. The city of nearly 55,000 is expected to grow to more than 71,000 by 2030.
