New Vehicles Begin Arriving for Trolley Extension
In October, the local media and about 150 guests got a firsthand look at San Diego’s next generation trolley the first of eleven light rail vehicles (LRV) for the Mission Valley East (MVE) extension.
The Siemens manufactured, next-generation trolley incorporates a streamlined exterior design, a new concept in passenger seating, an ergonomic interior cab design, low-floor, platform level boarding and ramps at doorways located in the vehicle’s midsection provides greater convenience and safety for mobility-impaired riders, as well as for seniors and parents with young children and strollers.
As each of the 11 cars arrive in
San Diego
they will undergo a battery of tests in the San Diego Trolley LRV yard and on the system before they are commissioned for public use.
The state-of-the-art LRVs will be used on the San Diego Trolley’s MVE extension which will open in Summer 2005. The Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) is constructing a 5.8-mile extension of the Trolley east through
Mission
Valley
to
La Mesa
via an underground tunnel at San Diego State University (SDSU). The $496 million project will provide an important connection in the region's public transit system for those commuting to work, school, and events at Qualcomm Stadium and the
PETCO
Park
. More information about this project can be found on the MTS Web site.
