$9.4 million awarded for SANDAG
smart growth projects

The SANDAG Board of Directors awarded $9.4 million in grants to municipalities on May 22, 2009, to help pay for smart growth initiatives – improvements that support compact, transit-oriented developments that also create interesting places within communities.

“These projects will serve as catalysts for smart growth developments throughout the region,” SANDAG Executive Director Gary Gallegos said. “Our goal is to create great places – inviting centers that offer people the choice of living, working, and shopping without always driving in a car.”

SANDAG awarded the grants through the first funding cycle of the new TransNet Smart Growth Incentive Program, which will issue grants every two years for the 40-year life of the TransNet extension approved by voters in 2004. A wide variety of applications were considered for the grants, which were awarded for capital and planning projects.

The Board awarded $7.5 million to eight capital projects, including $2 million for the 8th Street Corridor Smart Growth Revitalization in National City, $2 million for the Third Avenue Streetscape Implementation Project in Chula Vista, and $1.9 million for the Lemon Grove Trolley Plaza. Additional grants were given for pedestrian facilities, traffic calming, and bike lane improvements.

Six planning projects also received grants totaling approximately $1.9 million. The selections included $400,000 each for the Palomar Gateway District Specific Plan and EIR in Chula Vista, the Euclid and Market Village Master Plan in San Diego, and the Imperial Avenue and Commercial Street Corridor Plan in San Diego. The Board also awarded $160,000 for the Oceanside Boulevard Corridors Specific Plan and EIR in Oceanside.

A total of 43 applications were received, requesting just under $30 million. SANDAG followed a comprehensive project selection process developed with extensive stakeholder involvement. Grants were available only to the 18 cities and the county government.
