Tap & Ride with Compass Card Compass Card

The official rollout of Compass Cards to all public transit continues! During the next few months paper monthly pass holders will transfer to the latest in smart card technology for transit. By fall 2009, all monthly paper transit passes will be on Compass Cards.

Roll-Out Schedule

COASTER and Premium Express Bus:
COASTER and Premium Express Bus monthly pass holders already have transitioned to Compass Cards.

MTS Bus and Trolley:
Compass Cards will be available by June.

BREEZE and SPRINTER:
Compass Cards will be available in the summer.

Compass Card Options

The Compass Card offers new, flexible pass choices. You may purchase a calendar monthly pass, which is good from the first day to the last day of the month, or a 30-Day pass, which is good for 30 consecutive days from the date of purchase. You decide what works best for you!

Getting Your Compass Card and Reloading It

While supplies last, your Compass Card is free. There are several ways to get your new Compass Card – and remember, once you get a Compass Card, there’s no need to get a new one. Reloading your Compass Card is easy.

Vons and Pavilions will be the exclusive grocery store outlet for transit passes and Compass Cards starting this summer. With 56 locations in San Diego County, Compass Card customers can conveniently purchase or reload their transit passes at their local grocery store.

Here’s where you can obtain and reload your Compass Card:

  1. Purchase one at a Ticket Vending Machine at any MTS or NCTD rail station
  2. Go to the MTS Transit Store or an NCTD Customer Service Center
  3. Visit www.511sd.com/compass to purchase online
  4. Vons and Pavilions stores in San Diego County (starting July 1).
  5. Call 511 and say “Compass” to speak to a customer service center representative and purchase a pass with your credit or debit card

Using Your Compass Card

Each time you board your bus, tap the card on the special Compass Card bus validator. Look for the Compass Card symbol on or near the fare box. For the Trolley, COASTER, and SPRINTER, look for the validator on the station platform and tap your Compass Card on the symbol. You may use any validator designated for the service you will be using (Trolley, COASTER, SPRINTER). Remember to always tap before getting on the Trolley, SPRINTER, or COASTER.

Secure Your Compass Card

Register your Compass Card by calling 511. If a registered card is lost or stolen, SANDAG will replace it and restore the pass value to the new card.
