The MTS Code Compliance enforcement team certainly has not gone to the dogs; instead the dogs have come to the MTS.
Called the MTS Canine Explosive Detection Unit, “Sgt. Bino” and “July” and their handlers Sgt. Len Parham and Sgt. Jose Manzo are now on the prowl throughout the MTS bus and Trolley system.
The team will not only make routine inspections but will respond to reports of suspicious packages to ensure that the packages are not dangerous.
“These four-legged security officers -- and yes, we treat them and respect them just as we do all our officers - really have ‘a nose’ for their work,” said Bill Burke MTS Director of Security. “They are rigorously trained to identify various types of explosives.”
MTS is one of only ten rail agencies in the U.S. to receive these highly trained animals. The Transportation Security Administration has the most rigorous canine training program in the country. Additionally Sgt. Parham and “Sgt. Bino” were awarded the “top dog’ award for earning the highest ranking among officers in their training class. Additionally, a third dog and handler are in training and will be on duty beginning May 17.
“These canine officers will enhance the security of our entire system,” said Burke. “But remember, these are working dogs and they take their work seriously. We ask that people do not attempt to approach or pet our canine officers out in the field.”
