Super Loop community meetings yield valuable insight

Nearly 60 people attended two community meetings in late March to receive information and provide input on the much-anticipated Super Loop transit project which is scheduled to begin operations in late 2008.

Topics of discussion included proposed Super Loop alignment and station locations; connections to existing and future transit services; current traffic conditions in the area; strategies to speed-up Super Loop service; station design concepts; vehicle attributes and examples; and project branding. A general overview of the project history and schedule was also presented.

The Super Loop will traverse a circulator transit route, generally providing more frequent, higher speed transit service and upgraded transit stop and vehicle amenities within the North University City area of San Diego. It is estimated that the buses could frequent the designated stations every seven to ten minutes during peak periods.

In addition, Super Loop vehicles will incorporate traffic priority features allowing the vehicles to move through traffic more rapidly than traditional transit vehicles. They will also operate with low emission technology.

The Super Loop project is funded by TransNet, the local half-cent sales tax extended by over 67 percent of the region’s voters in November 2004. Construction is scheduled to begin in late 2007.
