Bayshore Bikeway groundbreaking August 5 Bayshore Bikeway

Everyone is invited to attend the groundbreaking ceremony on August 5, 2011, for a new stretch of the Bayshore Bikeway, which will eventually provide a continuous 24-mile loop around San Diego Bay for cyclists and pedestrians.

The ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. off the intersection of Bay Boulevard and West J Street/Marina Parkway in Chula Vista. Supervisor Greg Cox, chair of the SANDAG Bayshore Bikeway Working Group, will be the master of ceremony. SANDAG Second Vice Chair and Imperial Beach Mayor Jim Janney, Chula Vista Mayor Cheryl Cox, and San Diego Unified Port District Chairman Scott Peters also are scheduled to participate.

The project, located entirely in Chula Vista, will add 1.8 miles of bike path between H and Palomar streets along Bay Boulevard. The $1.5 million project is funded by federal funds and the TransNet half-cent sales tax administered by SANDAG. SANDAG will oversee the construction, expected to be complete by the end of the year.

Currently, about 13 miles of Bayshore Bikeway, or more than half, are built. The latest project marks another major milestone in fulfilling a regional vision to create a world-class recreational amenity.
