Service Bureau provides Service Bureau
transportation modeling services

The SANDAG Service Bureau offers a multitude of research consulting services in the areas of GIS mapping, demographic and economic studies, survey design and analysis, criminal justice studies, and transportation modeling and analysis. This month’s rEgion article highlights our transportation modeling services.

The SANDAG transportation model is a useful tool for both regional and local decision making. The Service Bureau uses the model to evaluate transportation impacts of proposed developments for the private sector and for General Plan and Circulation Element changes for local jurisdictions. Proposed projects can be tested using existing or future scenarios for the purpose of mitigating the traffic impacts of those proposed developments.

While the majority of the transportation projects are short-term lasting less than one month, we also work on longer-term projects to assist jurisdictions with general plan updates. Currently, we are assisting the County of San Diego with traffic modeling for the environmental impact report phase of their General Plan 2020 Update. In addition, we are working with the Cities of Carlsbad, Oceanside, Vista, San Marcos, Escondido, and Poway on a long-term project to update the combined North County Transportation Model. This subarea model will produce current and projected travel volumes and times tailored to the traffic patterns of the six north San Diego County cities. It will serve as a base for the cities’ travel demand forecasting needs and should be completed this summer.
