Work begins on SR 52 extension Drivers in Santee and communities to the east had good reason to celebrate the new year in January as officials broke ground on work to extend State Route (SR) 52 from SR 125 to SR 67. Once construction is complete, the new section of freeway will provide traffic relief on parallel routes and local arterials, including Interstate 8, Mission Gorge Road, Mast Boulevard, and Prospect Avenue. The new segment of this four-lane freeway – stretching from SR 125 east to Cuyamaca Street in Santee – is one of three sections of SR 52 in Santee being improved with TransNet half-cent sales tax revenue allocated by SANDAG. “We know the SR 52 expansion has been a long time coming, but we at SANDAG, Caltrans, and the cities of Santee and San Diego are working together to deliver on the TransNet promise,” said Lemon Grove Mayor Mary Teresa Sessom, SANDAG Board Chair, at Saturday’s groundbreaking ceremony in Santee. Santee Councilmember Jack Dale, SANDAG Transportation Committee Vice Chair, was the emcee at the event. Also in attendance at the groundbreaking ceremony were City of San Diego Councilmember and SANDAG Transportation Committee Chair Jim Madaffer, Encinitas Mayor and SANDAG Board 2nd Vice Chair Jerome Stocks, and Caltrans District Director Pedro Orso-Delgado. All corridor improvement projects, at a cost of approximately $600 million, are expected to be complete in 2010. The next project segment to begin construction will be an extension of the third eastbound lane on SR 52 from just east of the Mission Trails Summit to Mast Boulevard. This project will begin construction within the next two months. Project Manager:
