Directors recently approved the final Automated Regional Justice Information System (ARJIS)/SANDAG consolidation plan. Benefits of consolidation include providing seamless regional public safety policy and enhanced legislative outreach and funding opportunities. Next steps include adoption and execution of the modified ARJIS Joint Powers Agreement by ARJIS member agencies, and consolidation implementation which is scheduled for completion by July 2004.
A new Public Safety Committee has been established at SANDAG to combine the people, talents, and technical skill sets of ARJIS and Criminal Justice Research Division staffs to implement comprehensive public safety and criminal justice research programs.
ARJIS is a comprehensive criminal justice enterprise network (ARJISNet) utilized by 50 local, state and federal agencies in the San Diego region. The ARJISNet secure intranet contains data on the region’s crime cases, arrests, citations, field interviews, traffic accidents, photographs, sex offenders, gang information, and stolen property.
SANDAG’s Criminal Justice Research Division continues to be a resource for local communities to assist in the planning process for crime prevention, public safety, and crime-reduction strategies. The Division functions as the Regional Criminal Justice Research Clearinghouse to compile and analyze crime and arrest trends and to provide historical and current crime and justice information for member agencies, law enforcement, and community organizations. The Division also offers independent and objective evaluation of specific programs geared to address crime, social, and quality of life issues in the region.
