Compass Cards arrive! Compass Card

The official roll out of the Compass Card to all of the region’s public transit users begins in April, with COASTER and Premium Express Bus customers first in line to use the latest in smart card technology.

Roll-Out Schedule

COASTER and Premium Express Bus:
COASTER and Premium Express Bus monthly passes are now available on Compass Cards. There will be no paper monthly passes available for COASTER and Premium Express Bus customers beginning in May.

BREEZE and SPRINTER:
Compass Cards will be available by May.

MTS Bus and Trolley:
Compass Cards will be available by June.

Compass Card Options

The Compass Card offers new, flexible pass choices. You may purchase a calendar monthly pass, which is good from the first day to the last day of the month, or a 30-day pass, which is good for 30 consecutive days from the date of purchase. You decide what works best for you!

Getting Your Compass Card and Reloading It

While supplies last, your Compass Card is free. There are several ways to get your new Compass Card – and remember, once you get a Compass Card, there’s no need to get a new one. Reloading your Compass Card is easy.

Compass Card

Here’s how you can obtain and reload your Compass Card:

  1. Purchase one at a Ticket Vending Machine at any MTS or NCTD rail station
  2. Call 511 and say “Compass” to speak to a customer service center representative and purchase a pass with your credit or debit card
  3. Go to the MTS Transit Store or an NCTD Customer Service Center

Using Your Compass Card

Each time you board your bus, tap the card on the special Compass Card bus validator. Look for the Compass Card symbol on or near the fare box. For the Trolley, COASTER, and SPRINTER, look for the validator on the station platform and tap your Compass Card on the symbol. You may use any validator designated for the service you will be using (Trolley, COASTER, SPRINTER). Remember to always tap before getting on the Trolley, SPRINTER, or COASTER.

Secure Your Compass Card

Register your Compass Card by calling 511. If it is lost or stolen, SANDAG will replace your card and restore value to it.

For More Information

For the latest Compass Card information, visit www.sandag.org/compass or call 511 and say “Compass.” The Customer Service Center is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
